A statement fireplace can give a room the ‘wow’ factor. We avoided using large lintels in the design by instead building a series of arches using a simple wooden form. I used self-adhesive linoleum tiles to cover the old white linoleum. And here’s what our fireplace mantel looks like now that it’s been painted. Custom built wood fireplace mantel – Tule Peak Timber Photo Gallery.
I painted the area around the fireplace box with Olympics Flat latex Zero Voc paint in Black Magic and the rest of the fireplace in Cloud White (flat latex) a Benjamin Moore color. Then we built a new firebox with a white oven on top, in the old fireplace.
Here is the final product for my ’70’s fireplace remodel. There is no need to remove the old linoleum unless it’s in very bad disrepair. I mean seriously, we tackled brick demolition, tiling, rip cutting, bench planing, trim installation, new painting techniques, and more!
You don’t need to remove the valences as long as you use Blue Painters Tape between the wall and valence. We reviewed the development of these stoves through history, and introduced some well-known models, like the Russian Stove, the German Kachelofen, and the modern masonry heater.
We learned how to properly scale the stove in relation to the space it is being built to heat. I love to rug hook, design folk art, and play in my studio as well as work in my veggie garden. After the mantle was done we attached furring strips to the top half of the fireplace brick just like we had done to the bottom half.
