2014 Kitchen Remodeling Trends, Part 4 (6)

My partner would not let us store dishes, glases etc in open cabinets because of the grease and dust that happens to set on the dishes as soon as it gets steamy in the kitchen (which happens every other day in the cold season when we cook and can’t open the windows).

I went to home shows and talked to builders and contractors, all of whom wanted to come and gut my kitchen. Lastly, and most excitingly, hwere magically making the orange cabinets disappear. You can see that I only had to replace one rotten floor board in front of the door.kitchen remodel costkitchen remodel cost

Drywall is finally done, so we spent the weekend painting the ceiling and the walls to prepare for the cabinets which are scheduled to be installed this week. I tore the outside-facing walls and floor out, sprayed some icynene spray foam insulation and sheetrocked things back up. I used to work for an outfit that did the sprayfoam so that was a really nice score.kitchen remodel cost

It wasn’t as deep as the base cabinets, so we had to make it look that way. Before we tore apart the kitchen, a typical Sunday for us involved menu planning, a trip to the grocery store, preparing several things that would could eat for dinner during the week ahead, and cleaning the kitchen afterward.kitchen remodel cost

The Kitchen Remodel (5)

There is no way I could ever tire of your kitchen..it speaks to me on so many levels. Trying to keep as many electronics off the counter as possible….We decided that the microwave needed it’s own home. Although our kitchen is old (1948), anyone who has seen it loves it anyway…has a bit of French charm to it. We did make some minor cosmetic changes after we moved in so it’s definitely way better than what it was.

After a lot of shopping, I finally decided on the countertop, but no backsplash. It may end up being the piece that, years later, we will be most pleased with. So if we had left the soffit in, we probably would have saved around $10,000 on electrical and dry walling.kitchen remodel cost

It seems like I’m glazing over A LOT of work here but it was all really repetitive; rip, joint, cut, join, glue, clamp and sand… So I guess at this point we see some before and after pics.

It’ll do for now, but it will be very nice to have a real kitchen again. It was the pattern we liked most and decided it was a big enough room that the larger tiles would look good. Kitchen Remodel REVEAL (13)

Your kitchen post has me thinking about my old kitchen in Nashville. Back in November, our neighbor who does kitchens helped us order cabinets from Ikea and he was going to put them together for us. It was really Formica as I found out when the installers came and removed it. And there was another surprise.kitchen remodel cost

We wanted to see if someone else would bid it lower than the general contractor. No big deal, and I was really surprised not to find any damage under the sink. While our kitchen will have to last a while, the one spare, needs doing space our condo has is a pantry corner.

At the end of week 1 the kitchen looks much the same as it did after the demolition. We discussed a few different design options and decided that keeping it simple was the best idea. I tried to think of ways …

The website we had hoped to find before beginning our own kitchen remodel. It didn’t technically give me carpal tunnel but it sure made me sure I had it. After a day of hammering that prybar I couldn’t make a fist the next morning. It has a rustic pine-fired” finish (perhaps there is a significant difference between a finish that was done with a fire fueled by pine rather than by oak or alder?) with a visible mark in the center that looks like a hand print from a worker’s glove.

Oak was similar in price, but to reddish, and a very hard wood, which meas cutting and adhering would be tougher. The next step was the removal of the back splash and counter tops. I think you mentioned it before in a previous post. The garbage truck has two metal arms that fold together on either side of the plastic bin, lifts it and dumps it.
