Fireplace Makeover With Details and Before and After Pictures. I hope that through my workshops I can empower people and give them the skills they need to create low-cost, low-tech, low-impact solutions to modern-day problems. We learned how to calculate the size of the space, the insulation value of the walls, and the rate of heat loss during design conditions.
I’ve worked with local governments and NGO’s on low-income housing construction; non-profits in housing and sustainable agriculture development; and with private companies in renovation and construction. I did this outside of the workshop because they were optional extras, and they also required modifying the existing structure – something I had promised during the workshop that we wouldn’t be doing.
We built a stovepipe system that could be installed inside the old chimney, without modifying the existing structure. Besides, there are laws governing the installation of casing and safety of the duct. The best way to make this decision is to seek inspiration online (think Pinterest!) and in fireplace showrooms.
Wooden Fireplace Mantels Decoration with Frame and Brown Sofa. To do this, we built 2 support columns off to the sides in the old fireplace, using salvaged bricks and a cob mortar. Hubby cut leftover pieces of wood into wedge shapes and used them to secure the crown molding to the mantel shelf brick.
Here’s a little bit of a side view so you can get a better view of the crown molding on the mantel. I had also installed a bit of ductwork in the chimney to take cold air from the downstairs pantry, heat it with the new thermal mass stove, and send it upstairs to heat the bedrooms.
