A statement fireplace can give a room the ‘wow’ factor. Cool Outdoor Fireplace for your Garden by Hagen and Zohar DigsDigs. Love not only the fireplace but the rest of the room as well. My fireplace obviously has no mantel – not because I made a conscious decision not to have one but because I hadn’t thought to make plans for one before the time of the stone installation.
Here’s a little bit of a side view so you can get a better view of the crown molding on the mantel. I had also installed a bit of ductwork in the chimney to take cold air from the downstairs pantry, heat it with the new thermal mass stove, and send it upstairs to heat the bedrooms.
We are in the process of redoing our old brick fireplace and, like you, have sort of framed our existing brick with wood to create a flush surface for the stone veneer. During this weekend workshop, we transformed a large, old fireplace in the Milmanda farmhouse into a vastly more efficient thermal mass stove, without altering the existing structure of the fireplace and chimney.
We built a stovepipe system that could be installed inside the old chimney, without modifying the existing structure. Besides, there are laws governing the installation of casing and safety of the duct. The best way to make this decision is to seek inspiration online (think Pinterest!) and in fireplace showrooms.
Here is the final product for my ’70’s fireplace remodel. There is no need to remove the old linoleum unless it’s in very bad disrepair. I mean seriously, we tackled brick demolition, tiling, rip cutting, bench planing, trim installation, new painting techniques, and more!
